GEN Y: THE LEADERS OF TODAY

This is a food for thought type of post. Young people, people who would be classed as Gen Y, have made most of the social media platforms built today. Facebook being my favourite example was initially built for fun and a great way for us to connect with people all over the world. A young person built that. A young person built Snapchat too.

Now, businesses have seen that they cannot ignore social media. So businesses have created various social media pages and some have absolutely no clue what they are doing. But guess who does? We do. I am seeing an increasing number of people work on their own time, in the location of their choice. More and more of us are stepping into our future in the way we want to and you can step into that too.

All the times you spent on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat can now add up to serious consulting skills. Yet, the people who are charging and making money off of this are middle aged people who just found out what a Snapchat was yesterday. Somehow, they are creating courses and charging people quite a bit of money to teach them how to use it and what are most of us still doing?

Our generation needs to wake up. We are the new leaders and we are the innovators. For a long time, we have adopted the traditional way of doing things. Go to school, get your education and get a job. It’s all been so linear. Now, the order is different and it is different because WE have disrupted it. We are the ones who made Facebook what it is and made Twitter fun so why shouldn’t we profit from it? We have been given a new beginning and that beginning is being part of the Internet booming babies who used MSN, BBM and so on. The easiest thing to do would be to simply sit back and continue to do things the traditional way but now is a new world order of tech and we are the ones teaching the elders how things work in today’s technological society.

So where is our money?

I’m writing this post to encourage you to turn your social time into paid work. You may think social media is just banter but trust me, there is a 35-year-old out there who wants to know how you get retweets or how you get likes on Instagram or simply they just want to know how to post on Instagram.

You don’t need a degree or specialised skills to make money from social media. The Internet currently doesn’t have strict rules in place yet but we are still not taking full advantage of it. All it takes is a little research and to be honest, most of us already have the skills. Between paying off bills or saving for a house or investing, there are many reasons to be making additional income via the internet. Make the most out of your youth. The world is ours right now; you just have to open your eyes to see it.
